Montpellier,
France
The four balconies of this top-floor apartment, located
in an elegant 18th century building above the Belgian consulate, overlook
the garden and trees of the Place de la Canourgue, along with the Cathedral
St-Pierre in the historical heart of Montpellier. Decorated in an eclectic,
seductive style, the apartment is divided into bedroom, bathroom, kitchen,
study and living area. The city, dubbed Le Paris du Sud, was
founded in the 10th century and is famous for its vibrant cultural
life. Highlights include the opera, museums, a university, and the
16th century botanical gardens, the oldest in France. Private cars
are banned in the narrow medieval streets of the inner city, which
also boasts fine examples of 17th and 18th century mansions, as well
as cafes, restaurants, a central wine and produce market, and numerous
shops and boutiques. The former capital of Languedoc, Montpellier is
close to idyllic countryside and vineyards, and is hard by the Mediterranean
with easy access to Marseilles, the Riviera and, further inland, Provence.
The city features an airport, while A TGV service provides links to
Paris and Barcelona. A ferry service to Tangier operates from Sete,
just 40 minutes drive away.
